I can be your buddy
by: Anonymous

Hi,
I appreciate your post.
You are right -- it is hard to fast. I think it can be much easier with a buddy for support.
I want to fast for healing. I grew up a compulsive overeater who nevertheless stayed quite slim -- then after ultimately getting ever so slightly heavier in my twenties, committed to a food plan and lost the weight -- but without really disengaging from the behavior of getting high on food. I controlled and have controlled my caloric intake for almost 14 years now; and I have even improved my diet, eating only raw foods for almost 2 yrs., but all this is still ina context of still using the act of eating as a druglike high, palliative. ... When I have fasted, the handful of times that I have, it's clear that this fasting is what I need to do... I get less food-addicted and my whole mind and life improve. ordinarily I live in a miserable state of sluggishness and chronic fatigue/depression. When I fast, I get healthy, energetic, and strong... from the intestinal healing and clearing out of intestinal bacteria that the fasting effects

.
The difficulty is finding the support to fast and the motivation, when I am as thin as I want to be... I make the excuse : "oh, what's the point?... I can get away with not fasting..." -- when my life is simply miserable!

So, in my struggle to fast, I would love to be your buddy. I have such... complicated difficulties in sticking to a fast and nighttime eating (ugh!!! I so empathize with the misery of it!! And later I can't even remember eating, which is horrible, since I rely psychologically on eating to provide a sense [so false] of "comfort."]) is one of them.

I have worked out a system of eating and of gradually taking longer and longer fasts. It sort of works. I am at the stage of taking a 36-hour fast right now. I have 13 hours left in this fast. Next a 42-hour fast, within 1 week's time, then 48 then 54 then 60 hours etc. And in between fasts I have my raw foods only and I have to eliminate the more triggering foods gradually and most crucially i have to limit my meals to 600 cals. AND wait 2 hours per 100 cals eaten after each meal, to eat again, therefore if i eat 400 cals, i have to wait 8 hours before eating again.

but as my fast grow longer they get more difficult to do

Also: my reaching out for support is horribly complicated by my having been bullied and invalidated always in my desires to push away the food or fast. So I feel I have to conceal my real thoughts feelings and self always and this has obtained since childhood, when my compulsive overeating began (and I was told I was not overeating and that I was a crazy danger to myself for wanting to stop eating in order to restore my dignity. This horrible invalidation has basically ruined my life. More later -- though it's important to focus on the here and now and on strategy sometimes too)
the other thing is I really want right now to do about a 12-day fast since coming up is my 40th birthday, 10 days from now. And I so wish when I made grand plans like this I could follow through on them -- insted of experiencing continual failure.
please write to me at laurakeefe@hotmail.com! I would love to be a friend and support mutually in fasting!
Regards
Laura
