Experimenting with Fasting. Fasting & Life Extension

I am actively researching life extension because I want to live as long and healthy a life as possible.
I discovered the concept of intermittent fasting which I interpreted to mean fasting for some part of a day. Most of the discussion seemed to focus on weight loss.
Although I could stand to lose another 20 pounds, my motivations was that it apparently mimics calorie restriction diets in its affect on the body.
I have done these part-day fasts for two days in each of the last two weeks with very little hunger. On one day I did not eat for about 36 hours (From dinner the day before to breakfast the day after. Again with little difficulty.
What I am looking for is some background on how fasting works to determine what amount of fasting (if any) I should incorporate into my life. This site looks like a good source.
