Don't let this fear stop you from fasting!

My husband is an ultra-runner, and he occasionally goes on fasts with me. Although his endurance is diminished for a while after a fast, it comes back relatively quickly once he returns to his normal healthy diet.

As for me, I am fit but not like my hubby ;) I like to do water aerobics or gently use the elliptical machine a few times during fasts (7 to 12 days), but usually only for about 15 to 30 minutes. Lymph fluid is moved through the body via muscle contraction only, and I don't feel comfortable letting myself stagnate. Of course, I don't force myself to exercise if I'm not feeling well.

Judging from our experiences, the biggest problem for both of us is the inevitable muscle loss that accompanies a fast. Once we re-strengthen our muscles, we're back to our typical fitness levels.

Hello, Congrats on coming back to your fitness regime, I cycle, spin, swim and play a lot of golf. I fasted for 5 days juice only as the water fast wouldn't have allowed me to continue exercising. The fast really kick started my metabolism and prevented me from overeating. Running is a superb way of getting fit and losing weight. I would say that running is the only sport that gives quick results.(weight loss and fitness) At the moment I eat mainly fresh fruit, dried fruit, nuts and seeds. This diet seems to give me the energy that I need for all the sport, and I maintain or lose weight, depending on the intensity of the exercise. My rule is reach for a fresh apple not an apple crumble tart, because I know if I have one bite of the tart, I wont stop until there is not even a crumb left. Fasting is the best way to get back on track, and then continue with a healthy eating plan. Good luck and enjoy the running again.
